What Stinks?
by Marilyn Singer
This nonfiction
picture book uncovers the secrets of smelliness. What makes
us hold our noses in disgust? Why do dogs like poop? How does
nature use smell to attract and repel? Lots of great photos
and a fun tone will keep readers turning pages to "sniff
out" the facts about stinky stuff. Kid-friendly, but with
a strong science emphasis, this book will fit well at schools,
as a gift book, and under a kid’s pillow next to the flashlight.

This 64-page book is filled with smelly specimens. Kids will
love it! They like to know what stinks. Ring-tailed femurs,
billy goats, and fan-leaf ginkgos—all stink. They represent
just some of the specimens detailed. The information between
the covers has been well-researched. The text travels from
the obvious to the obscure. The format is delivered in flashy
sections with wonderful accompanying photos. The pictures
alone are worthy of a look. Sidebars, insets, and magnified
sections are featured. This book presents a plethora of information
to use in research and report making. It’s an obvious
perk for science lessons. In addition, it could be extended
to cover geography and social studies lessons when discovering
where the stinkers originate. What may turn-off adults, holds
tightly to kids’ liking. As the inside cover mentions,
“vomit, urine, musk, poop,” are topics covered.
