Jamie McEwan
Author of: Sports Shorts, Whitewater Scrubs, Willy the Scrub
Jamie McEwan grew up in the Maryland countryside. He played football at a private school for ten “long” years because playing was mandatory. Mr. McEwan says, “I was always a scrub in football, no matter how hard I tried.” Later, he tried wrestling—and lost every match in his first season. He eventually got better at wrestling and became the captain of his college wrestling team.
Mr. McEwan knows a lot about whitewater canoeing, too. He raced whitewater slalom for more than twenty years. A two-time Olympian, he won a Bronze Medal in the 1972 Olympics, and he place fourth in 1992. He has also participated in expeditions on rivers in Canada, Mexico, Bhutan, and Tibet.
He graduated from Yale University with a degree in English. Whitewater Scrubs is his fourth book for children, and he has a short story in the upcoming anthology Sports Shorts (Darby Creek Publishing). Mr. McEwan and his wife, author and illustrator Sandra Boynton, have four children and live in Connecticut.
